HTC One X: software tuning

Half a year of regular HOX usage formed my opinion based on observations. Best part is that after series of hacks, tests and experiments I settled down with best setup I use for months now. If you are a geek replacing kernel or flashing ROM for a breakfast you may find it boring. Those of you however looking for one time customization for best results, read ahead. Software tuning Early users complained on limitations of HTC user interface. HTC… Continue reading

e-snowflake revisited

Four years ago I made microcontrolled snowflake decor using home made PCB based on toner-transfer process. I got back to this idea late in 2015 to make short batch for family and friends. Second version was about fixing design issues and adding extra features: rechargable battery, USB interface and automatic brightness regulation. Nice looking factory-made PCBs were ready in November 2015. Enhancements What remained from initial concept was… Continue reading

Toner transferred PCBs

Thanks to Chinese providers printed circuit board fabrication has never been so cheap. With PCB comparison tool it is also darn easy to choose from. Sometimes though old’ye home made PCB is what you are looking for. So I made a photostory from my one-hour creation process for newbies. If you have $15-25 spare, then within coupla days some Chinese factory will fabricate prototype 25-50 cm^2 boards for you and over next 2-3 weeks deliver to… Continue reading

Water Level Logger – overview

The logger part of Water Level Station experiment was second in line for design and development. The transmitter measuring water level was done first and turned to be just a warm-up comparing to logger feature list: self-powered unit with multitasking firmware, local file system and couple different local and remote buses and protocols. All that within the rigor of power and cost efficiency. Let’s take a look at the latter first. Drawing… Continue reading

GSM workshop

Warmed up with HTC smartphone fix among other micro repairs I decided to give a chance and fix two other phones with accidently damaged displays. Both Sony Xperia Z2 and BlackBerry Z10 were given ridiculous cost estimates by authorised service and I was given green light to mess up with both unused phones. New life of Xperia Z2 Sony Xperia Z2 was bought for nearly $800 some time ago while currently market value for new one is $500. Authorised… Continue reading

Water Level Transmitter – microcontroller

Once the signal from sensor is converted in ADC it has to be processed and delivered to remote master unit. Having extra local measurements sources, like temperature, it has to be combined altogether. Multiple transmitters coexisting on single line (bus) to master unit complicate protocol of data exchange. A microcontroller (MCU) is most flexible way to make it all happen. MCU responsibilities Microcontroller handles communication with its… Continue reading

Adriatic rulez

What would be the best place to spend short vacation in August if you are traveling a lot in business? Home, naturally. On the other hand having blissful lazy time somewhere apart from home would be also attractive, especially if the sunny weather and blue warm sea is guaranteed. Croatia is still one of not-that-far-away places meeting the criteria. I have already been there two times, in the middle and the southern part of coutry, and I like… Continue reading

Unrestful Cairo

Cairo never sleeps. I could experience it on my way from airport to hotel, catched by massive traffic jam at 11pm. In the morning I could sense typical arabic metropoly like Casablanca but raised to the power. Constant honking of car horns, smoky diesel engines and blazing hot got me tired from the beginning of a day. The oldest part of city was even more overwhelming. Dense of street bargains, pedestrians, street chaos mixed with prayers in a… Continue reading

New York

New York City. My first time in this iconic city, one of most European cities in the US. Staying in the middle of Manhattan for one week in January I had only a chance to touch the tip of an iceberg. I could taste it like daily rush fast-food more than rich in flavor tasty meal simply because I had effectively only one day and a half to wander around. Find below my experience of this cult city, some (miss)impressions based on couple… Continue reading

Into the wilder wild

Plan of return to Jo’burg projected a vision of visiting wild life park. Pilanesberg appeared to be better choice comparing to Kruger Park I considered first, as the former is in one-day-visit roundtrip distance. Budget of two free days was simply managed: day one – visit Pilanesberg not being eaten, day two – visit a friend living in Pretoria and get braai eaten. Such plan was obvious as local attractions were already… Continue reading
