How much cloud in the ownCloud?

Saying cloud we think Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud or similar. They are more or less cloud storages with extra services operating of stored data like web photo albums, in-browser document viewers, sharing data options and so on. Cloud storage in short is about keeping your data somewhere out there relying on provider’s infrastructure. It is more than data centers or online storage however. Cloud solution promises that all your clients… Continue reading

Kicad upgrade: push & shove and freerouting revisited

Kicad PCB toolset changed a lot over last two years. Great contribution from CERN is merged with stable release on one hand, new library format and projects migration necessity on the other. Meantime Freerouter cooperative tool disappeared and my reluctance to move was justified. Until recently when I gave migration a try. Time saving push-and-shove capabilities that I tried long time ago are now part of regular bundle. Whole bunch of new… Continue reading

SGS2 after Desire? NonSENSE

Days of my old HTC Desire are counted. Despite optimized custom firmware it runs too slow in critical situations leading to missed shots due to laggy camera, waiting long seconds to open apps, constant jitter when company bloatware (read: lotus mobile) is synchronizing, just a few to mention. Swapping HTC Desire for Samsung Galaxy S2 would be optimal choice, the latter still has best hardware-to-price ratio. Is it a good choice for Sense lover,… Continue reading

China for westerners

Hong Kong, metropolis in special administrative area. It is neither completely Chinese nor British any more. For me it is well known gateway between China and the rest of the world, a place where you can get export goods for nearly half of its retail price, like my Rigol DSO or DDS wave generator. I took an opportunity to be assigned for a short work there in June, curious to see a tip of an iceberg of Chinese culture. While many documentary TV… Continue reading

3D printing at home

These days turning imagination into reality at home is more real than ever. RepRap movement made fused deposition modeling technology affordable. Turning a figurine or mathematical object into physical object is exciting and funny and using 3D printer to fabricate mechanical constructions or replacement parts makes it another tool on a workbench. Yet 3D printing is far away from “Ctrl+P… ready” approach. Let me share the… Continue reading

Adriatic rulez

What would be the best place to spend short vacation in August if you are traveling a lot in business? Home, naturally. On the other hand having blissful lazy time somewhere apart from home would be also attractive, especially if the sunny weather and blue warm sea is guaranteed. Croatia is still one of not-that-far-away places meeting the criteria. I have already been there two times, in the middle and the southern part of coutry, and I like… Continue reading

The die has been cast

I remember my first digital circuit made up when I was teenager, an electronic dice, made of TTL logical gates, driving 7 LEDs formed to display any combination of dots of thrown dice. I realized it would be good microcontroller playground. Flexibility comming from programming allowed me to plan a bit more comple hardware: double dice display plus sound buzzer. Dice in action (movie) Years of being software engineering have influenced my… Continue reading

HTC One X: flagship like Titanic?

There is no doubt about superior features and sexy design of that smartphone. No doubt that user experience of Sense 4.x theme, which is much faster and lightweight, is appreciated by HTC lover as well as its reach and consistent user experience. No doubt reviews glorify this handset even though Samsung Galaxy S3 performs a little better from hardware perspective. It is sad however how quality assurance, both production and warranty service, is… Continue reading

Headphones for street skater

Urban skater wearing glasses is in trouble picking up right headphones. The problem is multifold. Let start with head movements that are really rapid, far more aggressive then runner or cyclist does. Wearing glasses means there are extra obstacles near ears interfering with some headphone types. Next, skating streets requires high situational awareness; headphones have to pass through ambient sounds. Also riding inline I can accelerate up to… Continue reading

USB power supply mod and 3G for TL-WR1043ND

Using multiple power-consuming devices in USB hub modded router will exceed limited power of built-in 5V rail of TL-WR1043ND router. In my case connecting both 3G modem and external HDD to led to power drops and root filesystem disconnections. Keeping router self-sufficient I managed to built additional 5V power regulator into the tiny case of router, making mobile internet as backup line for home network. 3G modem and extra switching power… Continue reading
