Connecting Hermes JMS to WAS 8.5.x over SSL
Hermes JMS client documentation lacks of how to connect to Websphere Application Server (WAS) messaging. Most googled receipts with Websphere keyword refer to MQ. While it is possible to expose WAS internal service integration bus (SIB) as MQ link, I failed on that part as WAS was throwing at me 2035 error no matter what I tried. I stepped back to use CORBA for native dialog with SIB bus. Playing with asynchronous communication with processes… Continue reading

Dojo offline documentation
Those who work with Java Script know, that Dojo Toolkit is not perceived as ideal library. Followers claim it addresses missing “enterprise” features along with mobile support and breadth palette of UI widgets, opponents discredit such viewpoint nailing down many core problems, poor documentation among them. I do not have a luxury of choice as IBM products I work with, like BPM or Worklight, heavily rely on Dojo. Being constantly… Continue reading
Dealing with HTC quirks
Even though I would not give up on Android powered smartphone, when it comes to details, little irritating things are coming out. Do not get me wrong: overall usability and general consistency is undoubted and makes the user comfortable most of the time. It is even more powerful with custom firmware. However, over long period of time I have noticed some quirks, collected most of them as a list of issues specific to my needs, and attempts to fix… Continue reading

FreeRouter for KiCad working in offline
KiCad has some built-in auto routing capabilities for laying out PCB wires. More advanced version, online auto-router from www.freerouting.net, can cooperate with KiCad and gives better results. FreeRouter however does not work in offline even after copying Java Web Start resources to local system; auto-router still checks internet access on startup. Irritated I hacked binaries and got rid of online check. Now you can make your auto-router… Continue reading
Water Level Logger – Firmware over-the-air
Over time firmware stabilizes but rework never entirely completes, either due to inevitable bugs or further enhancements. Manual firmware update applied to couple stations in the field has relatively low effort and is just dauting task. While number of stations grows, sparse distribution or distant locations starts to occur all that becomes significant task. Planning ahead I decided to equip the system with secure FOTA (firmware over-the-air)… Continue reading

Pimp my bus: from 8-bit AVR to 32-bit ARM
Going to newer architecture is unevitable evolution. ARM series is particularly good choice as knowledge of its core functionality is to large extent portable across manufacturers. While ARM Cortex-M chips are close to 8-bit AVRs in footprint size and price tag, they give more processing power and peripherals. More complex architecture and ultra-small packaging is often counter-argument on hobbyists forums. Does it really matter? Here is my… Continue reading
Water Level Logger – overview
The logger part of Water Level Station experiment was second in line for design and development. The transmitter measuring water level was done first and turned to be just a warm-up comparing to logger feature list: self-powered unit with multitasking firmware, local file system and couple different local and remote buses and protocols. All that within the rigor of power and cost efficiency. Let’s take a look at the latter first. Drawing… Continue reading
Water Level Logger – solar charger
It was my first work on photo-voltaic and rechargeable batteries technology. I have read a lot about mono- and poly-crystalline cells, tracking the highest efficiency points of panels (MPPT) or proper charging/discharging. Facing that I felt I have long way to go. Until I read article on Linear’s LT3652 all-in-one chip. LT3652 tiny case with underneath pad Even though it was quite expensive to figure out it if fits my needs at all, I have… Continue reading
