Vertex3 SSD pros (and cons too)

PC architecture recycles nearly every 2-3 years, after that time it is really hard to make any upgrades without replacing most of the hardware. Looking at my desktop computer I realized that I can boost it up only one way, speeding up I/O throughput. Solid State Drives (SSDs) become available to every Tom, Dick and Harry, give second life to any type of computer. One SSD is not equal to the other one, however; the more you dig and compare the… Continue reading

Rigol DS1052E silenced

If you are into electronics you probably know this very popular digital oscilloscope for amateurs. You might hear about its very annoying affliction: noisy stock fan. You need 5 euro and 20 minutes to make this device virtually soundless. Rigol DS1052E Since you have to open the box, modification voids your warranty! Be warned. I did not care since I have imported this device directly from Hong Kong two times cheaper comparing to local… Continue reading

Nigeria

With gunfire, blasts and religion clash in the north, the locals claimed the south areas are quite safe. Not enough though for a white man to take a walk in the evening or take a taxi from the street; stories of kidnapping remain deeply in unconscious mind not to tempt fate. The challenging engagement in Nigeria started with series of vaccination shots, astonishing visit to embassy and ended with connections to positive and open folks. Here… Continue reading

Trap in BPM new event handler editor

Early 2017 cumulative fix for IBM BPM 8.5.7 brought new section in properties for coach views configuration – events tab. This looks like a wink at SPARK toolkit being integrated with BPM product. SPARK introduced nice concept of configuration options storing Javascript code created outside of coach views, events code as one of them. Configuration option was limited to one line string however. New editor in events tab is multi-line with… Continue reading

Water Level Station – rain gauge

Measuring water level is fundamental goal of WLS experiment, hence its code-name (Water Level Station). Early summer 2014 hardware and software system had enough base services to make addition of entry-level pluviometer easy. Prior to PCB redesing for chinese factory I blueprinted and bread-boarded extra input circuitry in couple hours. Software part took me couple more days and my balcony-mounted station started measuring precipitation mid… Continue reading

In Moscow like in hell

July 2010 was nervous in Moscow. Hundreds of square kilometers of Russian greenfields and forests were burning around the capitol in uncontrolled way. And I had to be there in business trip.Temperatures in Moscow were amazingly high, reaching 39°C / 102°F, hazy weather and barely no wind. And this particular smell, as if the hell gateway has been slightly opened spreading fumes over. You could not feel the sulfur, tar however was noticeable. O… Continue reading

Water Level Logger – efficient 3.3V supply

Problem is simple: 3.3V DC/DC converter has to work with high input voltage (>20V), has to be highly efficient as it works continuously in energy scarce conditions, and has to provide up to 300mA dealing with SD card bursts without noticeable voltage drops. While size is not a concern, it is not a smartphone, simplicity and cost (again) is a factor. Looking for optimum took me couple iterations. Most of 3.3V stabilizers work with moderately… Continue reading

Andida 1800mAh smartphone battery

Some time ago I was facing spontaneous heavy battery drain, around 5% per hour, so that battery could not last one day doing anything. Far too much because it already could work 3 days on single charge, when idle most of the time. Pinning problem down I had installed fresh stable ROM, but it did not solve the problem. Suspecting battery damage I ordered cheap but widely discussed replacement – Andida battery. Dozen charge cycles and… Continue reading

Bitten by dead FTDI chips

Counterfeit chips have always been on the market. Most of the time stories were told about fake high-end components like computer GPUs. I did not worry and over last couple years I bought hundreds genuine chips from China. They were always low-cost components and always worked as in specs. Until now. When swindlers polish GPU to place new markings on it they are planning to earn $100-300 on each faked chip. When $2 chip is targetted, like FTDIs… Continue reading
