City of sand dunes
Saudi Arabia is not popular target for tourism, especially Riyadh located just in the middle of dusty landscape of sand dunes. I got two flavors of my stay there: I could observe most orthodox enforcement of Islamic law and try to see whatever was worth to see and reachable in time and distance. For those of you who have no idea how interesting is alloy of modern country combined with medieval’s way of ruling by law of Sharia let me just… Continue reading

Ramblings on Nivona 7-series coffee machine
It’s been few months from my last post so I needed some lightweight subject to warm up. I have chosen to collect a bunch of free thoughts and impressions over Nivona 7-series coffee machine after nearly a year of home usage. It is far from fulln blow review, so if you are looking for such one then carry on with searching. If you want see however what reviews usually do not bother to look at, like engineer’s perspective on this… Continue reading

China for westerners
Hong Kong, metropolis in special administrative area. It is neither completely Chinese nor British any more. For me it is well known gateway between China and the rest of the world, a place where you can get export goods for nearly half of its retail price, like my Rigol DSO or DDS wave generator. I took an opportunity to be assigned for a short work there in June, curious to see a tip of an iceberg of Chinese culture. While many documentary TV… Continue reading

Hello AVR world!
Years ago I have been in electronics world, while never seriously touched digital techniques. I dropped electronics in favour of computer science and become sofware specialist. Now getting back to electronics I see the power in programming integrated circuit to control fixed electronics assembly around. I am really attracted by microcontrollers. I was quite ignorant before I started digging into μC world. Now, wherever I look, I see these tiny… Continue reading

Like father like son
It is easy to notice that for last ten months I was away from my blog. There is a growing reason for it: my little fellow. For first few months after birth of Jackie I could split time between family, work and hobby. His recent addiction to whatever dad hides from me effectively keeps me away from workbench. Using unusual constellation of a bit of energy and free time (day off), mum being out of home and little buddy taking a nap next room, I… Continue reading

P0456 evap small leak detected
I was astonished when my beloved toy shouted at me “Close fuel tank cap!” from FIS message screen. Some time later “check engine” (CE) light lit on. My mechanic told me that small leak in tank vent system was detected and I should not bother until it pops up again. Such fancy environment-friendly system of gasoline fumes recycling is something that you can find only in USA models of VW group cars. Unfortunatelly my Audi… Continue reading

Is the Dead Sea alive?
The Dead Sea is quite alive, as long as humans count as its fauna. In fact over 33% concentration of salt and other minerals in water, makes underwater life completly dead. This gift of nature located in Jordan, is one of places in the Middle East on “have to see” list. One of unique properties of this solvant is high buoyancy; the body is only half submerged and it is easy to float with arms raised in the air. Those who dare diving… Continue reading

SSH and FTP custom ports firewall redirection in OpenWRT
Inspecting router log files I discovered occasional but massive login attempts. This is typical observation when SSH port visible from WAN is left on default port 22. Mine was set to custom and configured with firewall port redirection. At least I thought so. In reality custom port was accessible along with default port. Same problem affected FTP configuration. Looking at the UCI firewall commands I spent over hour to spot where the problem… Continue reading
Unf*cking my mac
Beer flushed thru air vents into Macbook mainboard killed it instantly. F-words came even faster as it was done by someone sitting next to me on the airplane from Germany to USA, a guy who called it an accident, not a fault. I was not surprised that later he did not respond to my contact attempts even though we exchanged business contacts for that purpose. What surprised me was his civil cowardice, especially contrasting to his higher rank US… Continue reading
