HTC One X: software tuning

Half a year of regular HOX usage formed my opinion based on observations. Best part is that after series of hacks, tests and experiments I settled down with best setup I use for months now. If you are a geek replacing kernel or flashing ROM for a breakfast you may find it boring. Those of you however looking for one time customization for best results, read ahead. Continue reading

Apple Messages failing to login to Google Talk

So you may want to synchronize your iChat/iMessage/Messages with Google Talk on your beloved device while the application insists on wrong password even though you double- (or even triple-) checked it is in order. Log review brings cryptic error like: imagent[816]: [Warning] XMPPConnection: Error: Error Domain=XMPPErrorDomain Code=112 “The operation couldn’t be completed. (XMPPErrorDomain error 112.)”. Googling leads nowhere so you probably starts looking around for other messenger app… before you move on though check out if you have right google configuration. Continue reading

ownCloud unsharing plugin

While reviewing ownCloud features, to get better view on its pros and cons, I realized that sharing feature has one serious drawback. To share a file or a folder you hover over it, click “share” and configure all details. The issue is that there is no single view of all shares, if you forget what actually you are sharing you need to browse through hierarchy of folders and check their status one by one. To solve this problem I made up simple plugin that gives single view of resources to unshare. Continue reading

How much cloud in the ownCloud?

Saying cloud we think Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud or similar. They are more or less cloud storages with extra services operating of stored data like web photo albums, in-browser document viewers, sharing data options and so on. Cloud storage in short is about keeping your data somewhere out there relying on provider’s infrastructure. It is more than data centers or online storage however. Continue reading

Opening Seagate Expansion Portable Drive 1TB

You do not own device if you cannot open it, I read on some forum. Or more probably you just want to swap disks not breaking the case. If you are owner of this portable disk you will find neither screws nor guidance how to open it up. On the wave of opening different plastic cases, here comes my “how to“. Continue reading

Power bank for smartphone

– Where do owners of high-end smartphones meet?
– At the power socket.
Sad reality is that most modern devices cannot hold longer than one day, and when used intensively may not last even couple hours. For urban animal with constant access to power source like car charger, mains adapter or USB at laptop, it is not a problem (just get into habit to keep it plugged as long as possible). For travelers there is other option: get extra battery and swap when needed. Some models have battery hardwired, then the extra battery comes in an external form. This is my short photo story from research on couple budget power banks for HTC One X. Continue reading

B*est skating

Freezing cold, snow outside and less than 3 weeks to New Year’s Eve means no more outdoor inline skating in 2012 at least in Europe. Autumn was good though, I would even say b*est since it matches to B{udap}est and B{uchar}est, two beautiful cities conquered at the turn of October and November. Continue reading

Dojo offline documentation

Those who work with Java Script know, that Dojo Toolkit is not perceived as ideal library. Followers claim it addresses missing “enterprise” features along with mobile support and breadth palette of UI widgets, opponents discredit such viewpoint nailing down many core problems, poor documentation among them. I do not have a luxury of choice as IBM products I work with, like BPM or Worklight, heavily rely on Dojo. Being constantly offline, ancient books and the online-only dev guides are pain in my frequently traveling ass. And that pushed me to make up local Dojo documentation server. Continue reading

Moscow in Autumn

Moscow

Short deployment to Moscow stopped me from re-exploring the city. Last time it was the haze of burning woods, this time rainy and cold weather of Moscow’s early Autumn. I am not sure what was worse, the atmosphere or my inclination to bitching, using both the picture drawn is simple: I do not like this place. Continue reading

HTC One X: flagship like Titanic?

There is no doubt about superior features and sexy design of that smartphone. No doubt that user experience of Sense 4.x theme, which is much faster and lightweight, is appreciated by HTC lover as well as its reach and consistent user experience. No doubt reviews glorify this handset even though Samsung Galaxy S3 performs a little better from hardware perspective. It is sad however how quality assurance, both production and warranty service, is a nightmare for HTC One X buyers. While WiFi antenna problem was officially acknowledged by HTC, hardware-related malfunction of GPS module is left unsaid. Ironically any flagship without working GPS can turn into Titanic hitting an iceberg. I did not give up though, however it took me two months to fix this critical feature and my One X works perfectly right now. It was worth it. Continue reading
