Water Level Transmitter – microcontroller

Once the signal from sensor is converted in ADC it has to be processed and delivered to remote master unit. Having extra local measurements sources, like temperature, it has to be combined altogether. Multiple transmitters coexisting on single line (bus) to master unit complicate protocol of data exchange. A microcontroller (MCU) is most flexible way to make it all happen. MCU responsibilities Microcontroller handles communication with its… Continue reading

Water Level Logger – insufficient RAM

For prototype I estimated that 128kB or flash would suffice and I was right; firmware took 75kB even though fatten up by embedded strings used across the code for tracing. On the other hand 4kB RAM of Atmega128 turned to be almost insufficient: I had to tune stack sizes of tasks with ten-bytes precision. Tests were running for weaks without problem, yet extra function added in chain of calls could potentially corrupt memory. I had to make more… Continue reading

Singapore, a week later

After disappointing first day, remaining part of my staying was more graceful, once or two times a day showers, humid and hot hazy weather for most of the time. Few evenings free of work and half of next weekend I could dedicate to see what is going on in this state-city. Eating and shopping, this is what Singapore is famous of. These days shopping is no more attractive as it was 10-15 years ago when European prices for electronics were way too… Continue reading

Rotate your wheels

Skating gives a lot of fun. When mastered enough, it is like flying few centimeters over the pavements. To make this feeling persistent, I am going to tell you my secrets of perfect wheels’ rolling. I was inspired by the rain that catched me recently while I was riding through the city, covering my boots with wet sand and mud. I am also inspired by situations I recall, when you could hear a skater, who was making whooshing and squealing… Continue reading

Refreshing Desire

HTC Desire is a mid-end smartphone with limited memory being already out of radar of HTC updates. Rooted phone can have installed customized firmware that accommodated recent changes. It is a bumpy road if you are into newest Sense (feature rich interface), yet still concerned with responsiveness, battery consumption and other factors. I found the solution holding most of my tight requirements. I would not even think about changing Starbust… Continue reading

WebPD JS editor hack

IBM BPM Process Designer started migration from desktop to pure web client long time ago. While lightweight tools are enablers for everything in cloud game, it is shame how productivity is ignored. For several releases IBM has not corrected even such fundamental feature like fixed-width font to give visual aid on indentation. Fortunately this was easy to fix once and for good. Default WebPD formatting (left) can be… Continue reading

SSH and FTP custom ports firewall redirection in OpenWRT

Inspecting router log files I discovered occasional but massive login attempts. This is typical observation when SSH port visible from WAN is left on default port 22. Mine was set to custom and configured with firewall port redirection. At least I thought so. In reality custom port was accessible along with default port. Same problem affected FTP configuration. Looking at the UCI firewall commands I spent over hour to spot where the problem… Continue reading

Nigeria

With gunfire, blasts and religion clash in the north, the locals claimed the south areas are quite safe. Not enough though for a white man to take a walk in the evening or take a taxi from the street; stories of kidnapping remain deeply in unconscious mind not to tempt fate. The challenging engagement in Nigeria started with series of vaccination shots, astonishing visit to embassy and ended with connections to positive and open folks. Here… Continue reading

Rigol DS1052E silenced

If you are into electronics you probably know this very popular digital oscilloscope for amateurs. You might hear about its very annoying affliction: noisy stock fan. You need 5 euro and 20 minutes to make this device virtually soundless. Rigol DS1052E Since you have to open the box, modification voids your warranty! Be warned. I did not care since I have imported this device directly from Hong Kong two times cheaper comparing to local… Continue reading

Mini-ITX home server – part two, software

In the late stage of hardware planning of new server I assumed software RAID1 support. Since this was my first time to play with disk array I reduced number of variables to minimum and have chosen Ubuntu Linux as server OS, distribution I know best. Overcoming installer defects I laid down the foundations, configured remote graphical access, migrated services, measured and estimated TCO of platform. Preparing for installation I discovered… Continue reading
